You should expect to be heard, first and foremost. At times we will challenge you, at times we will plan and problem solve together, and at times we will simply listen and empower you. It looks a little different for everyone. It's hard to say exactly what therapy IS, but, generally, what to expect from psychology is a collaborative discussion where you express all of the things that are difficult for you or the things you'd like to move towards, and we contextualise that within your history and experience, before collaboratively making up a plan. It isn't just "talking about feelings" (though sometimes it is!), nor is it "just doing homework" (though, again, sometimes it is!). Therapy is 100% a team effort, so you and your psychologist will figure out the best way to work towards your goals, whether that be making space for the processing of some old hurt, giving you some practical strategies, exploring who you are and where you want to be, or even just having some real-talk!
It's also important to note that each session will be 50 minutes in duration, and if you do not arrive on time session times cannot be extended.
An electronic copy of initial intake forms will be emailed to you prior your first session, which will need to be completed before attending your appointment. The first session will be a lot of you talking and a lot of us scribbling frantically, but thereafter we will plan together what you might benefit most from in therapy, whether that be developing strategies, exploring underlying beliefs or feelings, or making sense of the past, present, or future. As an adult, your first session will be a discussion about what has brought you to therapy and an overview of your relevant history. This might be more important for some people than others. As a parent of a child or adolescent, similarly, the first session is a getting-to-know you, but it can often be musical chairs – sometimes we all go in together, or we see caregivers alone, or we see the young person alone, or a combination of all three. We’ll collaboratively come up with a plan for session structure thereafter.
For face-to-face consults, we are located at room 2, 20 Gray Street, Ipswich, on the corner of Gray Street and Warwick Road. Parking is available on the street or under the building. Please enter the building from either the downstairs door or the verandah and take a seat in the hallway on the top floor.
For telehealth consults, you have the option of completing these via telephone or video in the comfort of your own space. If you’re seeing Melisa and video is your preference, a web link will be sent to your email at the time of your appointment; all you need to do is click on the link using a device that has access to the internet and web browser. If you’re seeing Tameika, Hayley, or Andrew and video is your preference, sessions are conducted using the Zoom app; just download the app prior to your appointment, and a link will be sent to you via email at the time of your appointment.

Other requests for information or brief reports should be discussed in the context of your treatment plan with your individual psychologist, but all reports or additonal documentation that requires completion outside of session times will incur pro rata fees.
We do complete NDIS, WorkCover, Medicare, and DVA reports as required under these funding schemes.
Each session is 50 minutes in duration. Session times will not be extended if you arrive late.
This absolutely comes down to you and your psychologist's vision for what you're looking for in therapy. Some people find it beneficial to do intensive treatment more frequently for shorter periods of time, while others prefer to see someone less frequently over a longer period of time. This can be impacted by your availability and financial circumstances, as well as the type of therapy you're receiving and your personal goals and preferred outcomes. This should be a discussion in the initial session with your psychologist as well as something you regularly check in about to make sure your frequency of sessions is working for you.
Sessions cancelled within 48 hours (or after 10am the Friday prior to Monday appointments) will incur 50% of the session fee (ineligible for any Medicare rebate) if you are attending under Medicare provisions or privately, or 100% of the session fee if you are attending under the NDIS. Sessions cancelled less than 24 hours prior to your appointment or non-attendances will be charged 100% of the session fee (ineligible for any Medicare rebate).
A reminder SMS will be sent to you, and it is extremely helpful if you can confirm your appointment. Please note that sessions must be explicitly cancelled or the fee will be incurred – just because an appointment is not confirmed does not mean we will assume you are not coming!
Repeat cancellations or no-shows will lead to a discussion about whether attending therapy at this time in your life is viable, or whether we need to take a break. This is to help us ensure that we can help as many people as possible! Please see our cancellation fees outlined on our Fees page.
